Coffee: about 8 out of 10 French people consume it regularly. In moderation, coffee has many beneficial properties for health: improving memory, concentration and morale. But what are its effects on sleep ? In this article, Bdreams tells you more!
- How does coffee affect our body?
Neurons located in the human brain produce adenosine throughout the day, the main function of which is to promote sleep and allow the body to rest in order to replenish its energy reserves. When you drink coffee, the caffeine blocks and acts on adenosine, causing an increase in heart rate and body temperature, keeping the body awake.
- How much ?
Caffeine begins to act on average 15 to 30 minutes after its absorption and its effect lasts from 3 to 6 hours depending on the person. The morning cup therefore has no impact on the night. The afternoon one can be more disturbing. But it depends on each individual and in particular on their consumption. The effects will be weaker in people who use it regularly.
Fun Fact: The world record for cups of coffee in 1 day is 84 cups! The lethal dose being 100 cups per day.
- An addiction ?
Coffee is also distinguished by the addiction it provides. The cup of coffee at breakfast, the espresso after a meal, the famous “ coffee break ” at work, so many opportunities to drink coffee throughout the day. But caffeine, as we know, stimulates and energizes and it is sometimes difficult to do without during the day and evening. This addiction even leads to a vicious circle since we consume coffee to be fit and efficient in order to often fill a lack of sleep… which can itself be caused by caffeine. Coffee therefore becomes a disruptive element of a restful sleep.
